The global population of snow leopards is estimated to be around 4,080 to about 6,590. In the past two decades, snow leopard populations have declined by at least 20% as a result of habitat loss, prey loss, and poaching. The main cause of the declining snow leopard population is human activity. There are many programs and organizations involved in protecting the snow leopard.
Panthera is an organization that brings together wild cat experts to direct effective conservation strategies for the world’s endangered cats such as tigers, lions, jaguars, and snow leopards. Their projects span over 50 countries and protect 22 species of wild cats. Its mission is to ensure the future of the wild cats through leadership and conservation. The organization hopes to protect all 38 wild cat species from human and environmental threats that are ongoing in the world. Panthera recognizes opportunities where it can most effectively contribute to conserving the species. It works with many countries to increase the effectiveness of the conservation of the species and to create new partnerships and programs.
o The Snow Leopard Program was introduced by the Panthera organization. It is a program that protects the snow leopard by performing research, training field biologists, assessing threats, securing their habitat, and working together with communities to decrease snow leopard and human conflicts. This program uses scientific research to build national conservation policies in snow leopard countries, creating country specific action plans with the local governments to protect the snow leopards at the highest level.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is a non-governmental organization that has been protecting endangered species for over 50 years. It is the world’s leading conservation organization that works in over 100 countries, supported by over one million individuals. Amongst other animals, the snow leopard is protected under this organization. It focuses on decreasing human and snow leopard conflicts, stopping mining in snow leopard habitats, and controlling illegal animal trading. In the Eastern Himalayas, this organization works together with communities to observe snow leopards and decrease the killing of them through local insurance plans. Furthermore, WWF works with goat herders in Mongolia to increase the awareness of this endangered animal to reduce the killing of them as retaliation for killing their livestock. WWF aims to help protect snow leopard habitats in Mongolia and reduce the illegal trade of snow leopard bones, body parts, and fur.
o Conserving Snow Leopards, Securing Water Resources, and Benefiting Communities is a project introduced by WWF to protect snow leopard habitats, promote water security, and help local communities to prepare for climate change impacts in Central Asia. This project conducts field activities in six of the snow leopard countries (Bhutan, India, Nepal, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, and Pakistan) and builds alliances with these countries to help protect this animal.

The Snow Leopard Trust has been protecting snow leopards for over 30 years in 5 countries: China, India, Mongolia, Pakistan, and Kyrgyzstan. These 5 countries include over 75% of the snow leopard populations. It builds community partnerships by using scientific research to determine the priorities for protecting the snow leopards. In each of the five countries, this organization builds partnerships to create successful conservation programs. Staff in each of these countries create sustainable conservation programs that benefit both wildlife and people. Such programs include the Livestock Insurance Program and Snow Leopard Enterprises.
o The Livestock Insurance Program helps communities decrease the financial impact of snow leopard predation by giving herders compensation for the animals lost.
o Snow Leopard Enterprises is a conservation program that works with individuals who live in the snow leopard habitat to create sustainable economic opportunities and reduce poaching.

The Snow Leopard Conservancy is a non-profit public charity that works with local partners and herder communities to protect the biodiversity of Central Asia’s high mountains. They provide technical and financial assistance to community programs and conservation of the snow leopard. They are also involved in snow leopard research and use this knowledge to introduce new conservation projects. Their main goal is to help local communities keep depredation at a controllable level, but strengthening stewardship in alpine ecosystems where the snow leopards are found. This charity provides communities with education on snow leopard conservation.
